In some cases, the parties are able to agree on everything, entering into a marital settlement agreement, and making this an uncontested divorce.
In other cases, the parties have basic disagreements over most everything, such as the division of assets and/or debts, the payment of alimony, the time-sharing schedule for the minor child, so forth. These are called contested cases, and usually require appearances in Court so that the judge may decide the case at Trial or Final Hearing.
